The tube charts are not very useful for determining the circuit model. At the Fender factory they used old tube charts when new models came, probably because the tube layout was the same. Determining production date by serial number and transformer codes is better, and you should also inspect the circuit to be completly sure. The picture below shows a transition model amp. Amp collectors and idealists often prefer the pre-CBS models but if we study the AB circuit it does have something very interesting for guitar players who enjoy cranked Fender blackface tones. The AA is very rare and its circuit and tone is quite similar to the AA We will further focus mostly on the AB vs AA The normal channel in the AA Bassman is cleaner than in the AB since it has no additional gain stage. We usually start with explaining a mod from a functional perspective where we relate to components in the logical schematics diagram.

It’s a Leslie speaker cabinet — an effects cabinet, really — made by Fender from It adds a phasing or chorusing effect to your amplifier’s output. This is a very desirable piece today because of its practicality and tone. It would be worthy of reissue. This is a fine song, among his best, but it has an unexceptional Vibratone sound.

For the next years, the square grand piano would evolve into a larger, heavier, and more mechanically refined instrument. Sadly, however, they are all but forgotten today. Because they were smaller and took up less space, the upright piano caused the square grand piano to become obsolete by By the late s and early s, conventional grand piano models began to appear in the sales catalogs of most manufacturers, but were still dominated by the selection of square grands available.

As the s and s approached, the square grand piano began to fade in popularity, and manufacturers started promoting their lines of grand and upright pianos. By about , smaller baby grand pianos started to become popular. These baby grand pianos were offered in a wide variety of styles, often to compliment particular periods in furniture design, but the most popular style by far was the spade-leg classic design that most of us associate with the traditional baby grand piano of today.

By the s onward, tiny baby grand pianos, like the tiny spinet upright piano, continued to be popular in the modern American home as people moved into smaller houses and apartments. The organs built during this era often had very high backs with carved panels, shelves, mirrors, etc. They were truly a hallmark in Victorian design! By the-turn-of-the-century, the organ had all but disappeared as the piano became the instrument of choice for the American home.

The major difference was in the cabinet. First, the cabinet was usually short so that the organist could see over it to face the choir or congregation.

To do this they entered into contracts with established sewing machine manufacturers who would supply standard models but with the name of choice substituted for the normal brand name. For the past 20 years I have been compiling a list of who actually made what and there are now over names in the file. The situation is further confused in that retailers might switch makers at the end of a contract period and the same name would then appear on a completely different machine by another manufacturer.

The Fender Bassman is a bass amplifier introduced by Fender during [ citation needed ] Initially intended to amplify bass guitars, the 5B6 Bassman was used by musicians for other instrument amplification, including the electric guitar, harmonica, and pedal steel guitars.

History[ edit ] The 5B6 Bassman[ edit ] During , the Fender 5B6 Bassman amplifier was introduced as a combo amplifier cabinet that included the amplifier chassis combined with one 15″ speaker. It was designed to generate 26 watts at an 8 ohm impedance load, and offered a cathode-based bias. In the cabinet designs were changed to the so-called “Wide Panel” design, with a 5 inch wide tweed covered panel above and below a wider swath of grill cloth.

Fender ceased production of 5B6 Bassman amplifiers during the spring of The 5D6 was a major departure from the earlier 5B6 Fender Bassman model. The circuit had two innovations:

Following the United States’ victory against the British, the new government forced the latter’s Iroquois allies to cede most of their traditional lands in New York and Pennsylvania to the US. New York made 5 million of acres available for public sale.

In addition, the US government granted some plots in western New York to Revolutionary veterans as compensation for their service in the war. Early life and education[ edit ] Lewis’ grandfather, Thomas Morgan of Connecticut, had been a Continental soldier in the Revolutionary War. Afterward he and his family migrated west to New York’s Finger Lakes region, where he bought land from the Cayuga people and planted a farm on the shores of Lake Cayuga near Aurora.

He and his wife already had three sons, including Jedediah, the future father of Lewis; and a daughter. In , Jedediah Morgan — married Amanda Stanton, settling on a acre gift of land from his father. They had eight more children, including Lewis.

E actually found this for me, deadstock, on eBay about 10 years ago. Since then I have re-tubed and recapped it entirely, and it is really a fantastic amplifier. Very simple, but always sounds great. The cabinet is not so great. We used it briefly in our teen-age garage band. For some reason, it regularly shocked the lead singer.

Worn or mismatched speakers in wattage or impedance ohms are one thing, but different speaker designs also provide dramatic changes in tone and response for guitarists. And this is an area that is all too often neglected. Ask many guitarists, “What speakers do you use?

Many of our reader questions become the basis of new articles written and this is certainly an example of one of those. These topic areas can be discussed in simple terms or they can be more scientific when one chooses to dig deeper. There are also a plethora of other topic areas that we could cover in the future that go into depth about calculation of speaker and cabinet design, magnet types, cones, and how they each impact tone. But, for the sake of this primer, lets first offer a rundown of the most well known Celestion speakers that have each contributed to make up “The British Sound” over the years.

This will be a general guide because even within each speaker type listed, there are various changes that have been made throughout its life. Sometimes changes were made for reasons of durability, sometimes for cost-considerations, and other times for both reasons.

Image 3 of 3 Valves The great man may have gone, but his legacy in rock ‘n’ roll continues loud and proud. Over the past year or two, we’ve seen not one, but three massive signature amps – for Slash, Yngwie Malmsteen and Joe Satriani – and now Marshall has turned its attention to an amp range that for many years has been the cornerstone of the company’s catalogue: Dating back to the late s, the DSLs have been in production ever since, and many people see them as the spiritual successors to the JCM and ranges that did so much to define modern rock-guitar tone.

Well, here it is, and we’re reviewing the standard bearer from the new range: Cracking open the box, it’s no surprise that the amp draws heavily from the iconic Marshall style; an oversized cabinet, black vinyl, black grille, gold panel, white piping and, of course, the familiar white script logo are all present. The generous cabinet dimensions contribute to a somewhat larger-than-life presence, but the proportions are solid and balanced.

You may compare these with your own speakers to determine what you have. Speakers are like ice cream; we all have our favorite taste. Some like strawberry while others like chocolate. What someone finds harsh can be beautiful sparkle to others. Speakers can have different frequency response depending on materials and construction design, like cone shape, magnet weight and coil size.

New speakers will therefore sound different from vintage speakers. There are of course exceptions to our preference of American speakers. One is a heavily cranked amp with a bright single coil guitar. The amp has a huge bottom end and a slightly edgy Fender 6L6 push-pull class AB cranked tone.

While the age of an amp has no bearing on how good or bad it sounds, it can have an impact on the selling or purchase price of a Marshall rig. I think it offers great tone and flexibility in this price range; definitely a good intro to the Marshall tube tone without breaking the bank. Unless you’re neighbors have an owl’s hearing and like to complain, I think you’d be happier choosing this amp over the 5-Watt version if you’re concerned about volume like I was. At first I thought the reverb was pretty weak as others have commented , but after the amp has burned in over a month of daily use, it seems to be coming to life.

In fact, I thought the reverb wasn’t even working when I first unboxed it, but now I think it’s definitely more than enough to get the job done and save me from buying a pedal. The “Tone Shift” button works great and gives the effect of scooping out the mids and raising the treble and bass with an EQ pedal. The “Deep” button is also pretty great and adds some warm darkness to the dirty tone on the second channel. The clean channel isn’t as clean and sparkly as with my Fender amp, but I didn’t expect it would be; it’s warmer and just slightly more gritty to my ear.

It also responds great to pedals I use a wah, compressor, overdrive, EQ, and delay. The included foot switch is okay, but it would have been nice if there were some LED’s to let you know when they’re engaged there’s no light on the amp for Reverb either Some folks have commented that this model is made in Vietnam so perhaps it’s not up to the same quality as those made in the UK. I don’t know about that, but what I do know is that the build on the one I received is substantial and perfectly executed.

No, it’s not made from the same materials as those made in the UK MDF rather than plywood, perhaps different Tolex, and missing some of the finer details , but it’s also a lot less expensive; they did have to do something to keep the price down. It’s a substantial feeling amp, far more substantial feeling than the Fender Super Champ X2.
