Replica made from the alleged Caprotti sketch. There are several early but unverified claims for the invention of the bicycle. The earliest comes from a sketch said to be from and attributed to Gian Giacomo Caprotti , a pupil of Leonardo da Vinci. In Hans-Erhard Lessing described this as a purposeful fraud. Augusto Marinoni, a lexicographer and philologist, who was entrusted by the Commissione Vinciana of Rome with the transcription of Leonardo’s Codex Atlanticus. Drais invented his Laufmaschine German for “running machine” in , that was called Draisine English or draisienne French by the press.
Some bike parts have a date code cast or stamped into the piece. This clearly is when the component was made and not when the bike was made, but unless the component or bike manufacturer had lots of stock lying around in inventory, the date should be a fairly good indication of the year of the bike. At least it would be the earliest date that the bike could have been made. Of course, all this assumes the bike has the original component. The most likely components to be original are the stem, handlebars, seatpost, and brakes.
On a vintage bike in excellent condition that apparently had a lonely existence in a garage all of the components likely are original.
How Old is My Bike? Unfortunately, exactly dating a Peugeot earlier than the late s is an art rather than a science, and is often an estimate at best. Even original owners have a hard time remembering the year that they purchased the bicycle.

FRAME NUMBER BICYCLE DATING GUIDE
Built by the Berlin-based workshop Berham , this skeletal machine whipped the ass of several factory-backed entries at the Glemseck festival a few days ago, taking home the coveted Sprint International trophy. When Berham main man Martien Delfgaauw got the prized invitation, he knew exactly where to start the build: With a genuine Harris frame owned by his partner Felix Pilz.
Twenty years, ago Felix had bought the frame from a former Harris dealer. The design concept became obvious: Let the Harris frame shine.
Schwinn Serial Numbers and Date Codes: Dates between and are available because Schwinn kept good records. From on, several different coding systems were used, from which the manufacture date (and often the assembly date) can be decifered.
Contact The History of the Folding Bike There have been many who have laid claim to the invention of the folding bike. Humorously, a bike manufacturer who shall remain nameless so as to not unduly embarrass them audaciously claims on their website to have produced the world’s first folding bike in Wishful thinking by their marketing department I suppose. The truth is that the folding bike has been around for considerably longer than one might imagine and most claims of being the first are erroneous.
First things first though, you can’t have a folding bike without the invention of the bicycle itself. So a very short history lesson on the bicycle is in order.

Nov Dec The second number is the last digit of the year, 6, 7, 8, 9 for X and 0 for Again, this is the date of serializing, not necessarily model year. The last three characters – The final letter ranges from A to Z and the final two numbers go from 01 to
Does anyone know how to correctly date ALAN frames from the frame numbers? There’s no obvious pattern to the stamp in regards to being in date form and still match the estimated age of the frame.
The Team Mongoose and Supergoose frames are a little different. This was done to give better clearance for the chain. Very early team frames had a “T” but without the flattened seat stay, but these are very few and were in mainly. In and onwards, a Team frame was also offered in “Show Chrome” as well as red or blue candy coat. Serial numbers from In April and onwards the frames were coded differently.
The “C” was dropped and they started out with a single letter followed by a sequence of numbers. The frames were still made in Chatsworth up until when they moved to Moorpark. As before, the letter indicates the month and the first number or the second digit in the sequence indicates the last number for that year. Also of note is the “T” for team , was also dropped. There was a few “crazy” months around April, May and June in , when there was mix of old and new dropouts being used.
The easiest way is to check the brake bridge for the extra two slotted holes that were added. These extra holes were only on the full cromo frames that had the “step down” type dropouts. If your frame has holes in the dropouts, BUT does not have 3 holes in the brake bridge, its NOT a supergoose, even if its chrome See dropouts page here. Sometime in the bottom bracket brace was replaced with an open design see picture below.

Locating the Serial Number – Chicago built Schwinn serial numbers are found on the left rear axle-hanger or fork-end on the frame. If letters were used for date codes, they skipped the letters “I” and “O” as they looked too much like numbers. This scheme is for all Chicago built non-Paramount models excluding Superiors and Super Sports whose serial numbers are located on the left rear axle hanger and consist of a single letter code for the month [again, skip"I” and"O”], the last digit of the year and a 3-digit sequential build number — e.
Frame ID > Serial # Interpreting the Serial numbers and features on BMX Products, Inc. Frames. Identifying the serial numbers on the early Mongoose frames is actually quite easy and intuitive.
Larger Image The name says it all – the top of the Schwinn line. Schwinn today is part of Pacific Cycle. While Schwinn often had a reputation for building heavy bikes for kids, the Paramount line had a reputation for finely crafted, relatively light road bikes. That is obviously a great price. The very nice woman selling it was good natured about the low price. The bike had belonged to her uncle who no longer used it. I believe the frame was built in The same site has the original price list.
There is a larger photo in the Consumer Catalog. I like the and earlier catalogs where they took photos on location. The fashions are a hoot!

Some of the mid ‘s straight gauge frames had serial numbers starting with a single letter which was towards the end of the alphabet. This new system applied to the high-end i. Reynolds frames, and involved the placing of a character at the beginning of the serial number. The character began at the start of the alphabet, and indicated year of manufacture. Detail about the numerals that follow the alphabet are sketchy, and are presumably sequential serial numbers of some kind.

See a lot of obvious errors in dating Kessels Merckx frames and here is some information and tips that may help. Feel free to add additional information or tighten up some of the dates quoted. Some help with tying down the date for the changeover of Molteni series One and Two and extending frame number ranges would be appreciated. Used details of about 15 well documented higher end Kessels Merckx frames, from Internet sources, to come up with the time line. Kessels high and mid — high end frames with some or all Reynolds tubing should have Campagnolo dropouts.
Be careful of trying to date frames by component Pat dates etc as many of the Series Two and Three frames would have originally come with Japanese components with owners subsequently upgrading them to Campagnolo components. I did this and now have 75 campy dated cranks and campy rear derailleur. If you split the date difference you would actually get a close approximation of my frames construction date but that was purely accidental.
The main area causing confusion is Kessls apparent re-use of numbers when a new series of Merckx labelled bikes were released. Series One, Molteni Orange — ? Kessels sticker on seat tube, can be early or later version. Paint more of a burnt orange. Frame Number stamped on left rear stay dropout. Inward curve where seat stays terminates at seat lug.

Denmark’s Bicycle VIN/dating system. It appears that Raleigh recycled many of the older serial numbers in later years, so there are lots of bikes from the 60s and 70s that have serial numbers that would suggest much greater age. (e.g. a “G” serial number may have been built into a bike in , but the frame may have been built in

Is the quoted g for the frame and fork? That’s about a kilo less than my mid 80s Razesa. Where do they save that much weight? I’m sure your frame is smaller than mine (56cm), and I bet the tubing is narrower, but a whole kilo?
